Jewish Community
In Chalkida, the capital of Evia, the Jewish community is the only one in Europe to live in the same place for two and a half thousand (2.500) years.
The first Jewish presence is noted around 580 BC.
In 1897, a local newspaper reported Barons’ Ferdinand de Rothschild- “sudden visit” and his public walk to the city’s monuments. The visitors of the Synagogue in Chalkida can see the name “Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild” engraved, first on the marble list of benefactors. During the German occupation, the Christian inhabitants of Chalkida, helped theirs Jewish compatriots and as a result Evia, had the least losses in Greece. Also the Metropolitan Gregory concealed the Holy Vessels of the Jewish Synagogue, in the Metropolis Church.

Special mention should also be made of the Jewish Colonel from Chalkida, Mordechaio Frizi, who was the first Greek Officer to fall heroically during the 1940 Greek-Italian war.
The synagogue today receives many visitors and holds important historical relics.
Also, the Jewish cemetery is considered an archaeological monument.

The island of Skyros is holding a special place in the Region of Central Greece. You will discover an outstanding landscape with crystal waters and a lot of tradition. Also, you are going to meet the worldwide known, Skyrian Horse.
Skyros is accessible either by ferry from the port of Kymi (Evia island) or by plane from Athens airport.
