About Peloponnese

The Region of Peloponnesus occupies the southern part of mainland Greece. To the west it is washed by the Ionian Sea and it borders on the Region of Western Greece, to the north-east on the Region of Attica while to the east lies the Myrtoan Sea.

Its total surface area is 15,490 km2 which corresponds to approximately 11.7% of the total area of the country. The Peloponnesus Region comprises 5 Regional Units, i.e. Argolid, Arcadia, Laconia, Corinthia and Messinia. There are 26 Municipalities on its territory. The main feature of its morphology are the large mountains, which cover 50.1% of the total area, while only 19.9% is plains and 30% semi-mountainous. The Peloponnesus Region however has some of the most fecund areas of Greece, such as the plains of Argolid and Corinthia.

It is an exceptional natural environment, with great advantages: the dominating mountains are very close to the sea, forming unparalleled routes, but also great opportunities for growth. Local tradition keeps pace with progress, and Peloponnesus is ready to play an important part, both in the country’s profile and also its European prospects.

The Peloponnesus region plays an important part in the country’s growth, as it produces 5.2% of the Gross Value Added (GVA).

The main field of financial development belongs to the tertiary sector (with 55.9% of the GVA), closely followed by the secondary sector (with 30% of the GVA), and last comes the primary sector (with 14% of the GVA). Peloponnesus, dependent on its rich history and natural beauty, is turning toward tourism, presenting significant growth in that area.

The total number of overnight stays by foreign and domestic tourists in the Peloponnesus Region reaches almost 2.5 million and corresponds to approximately 5% of the country’s total.
The Peloponnesus Region is a region with amazing features. Its numerous mountains are indicative of its variability.

Equally impressive is the number of its rivers.
